So I'm starting a new theme, of information you should know. Included in that theme are reviews of restaurants, movies, books, etc. Here is the first in the series, feel free to post along.
Hanks Oyster Bar.
Located on 17th and Q next to Fox and Hounds.
I never noticed this quaint little eatery before, even though I walked it's streets countless times. Once Corey and I noticed the place we had been dreaming of Oysters. And Bar. And Hank. So we ventured there today.
The seating area is small, but there is a nice patio for outdoor dining. Silly thing to know is that they won't seat you until the entire party is present. Even if the entire party is 2 and there is no one else around.
Once seated they give you a happy little dish of Goldfish brand crackers. Yummmm....
The menu is short on food and beer, long on wine. Beer is limited to Yuengling, Hooegarden, and 2 others. The food is a mixture of meat, ribs and such, and fish specials. Not a whole lot of oysters. The full entrees are 15-23$ and the sides/small platters are 2-12$. We chose the Pine nut and carmalized onion stuffed Rainbow Trout, a side of Mac and Cheezy, and a side of garlic and tomato mussels.
The mussels came first and were delicious as they were plentiful. I would go there just for a glass of wine and thee. yummm....
Then we waited for what seemed like a very long time for the rest of our food. The place had gotten quite crowded by then and it looked like there was only one waitress. Of course if we weren't in a hurry we wouldn't have minded, but alas, Corey had school.
Finally the fish and the mac and cheese arrived at the same time. They both seemed like they had been sitting, waiting for our overworked waitress for some time. Not cold, but not fresh out of the frying pan either.
The mac and cheeze was good. Not enough cheese for Corey's taste, a little too dry for mine, but edible.
The fish was better, but would have been better piping hot. The skin was left on and was deliciously crispy and the onions were also carmalized goodness. Worth the 18$? Nah.
Overall for an entree, 2 sides, and 3 beers it was 50+$
Worth it? Nah.
Would I try it again? Probably.
Overall rating? 3 out of 5 nices.
